Everyday solidarity during the Wende:
An approach from a life story

Usually when reading about the final years of the GDR, and those immediately following the fall of the Wall, stories of conflicts among migrants from the Global South or, in the Cuban case, the gap between workers and students, stand out. However, the story of this Cuban student, who arrived in the GDR in 1989, complicates this debate. It shows how, in the midst of a particularly difficult context for foreigners, it was solidarity shown by other migrants from the global South and Cuban workers which helped him through these years of uncertainty.
